The SMILE project
Tuks Rag is considered to be the biggest charity organization of its nature in South Africa. Tuks Rag does community work in surrounding areas to uplift the circumstances of the people of our country and this year the Rag Queen Debutants of the University of Pretoria want to help change a person’s life forever.
Every year about a hundred babies are born with cleft lip/palate and facial deformities, these babies are brought to the Pretoria Cleft Palate and Facial Deformity Clinic at the Pretoria Academic Hospital and sadly only about twenty to forty operations can be done yearly by the hospital, thus about sixty to eighty of these babies are put on the waiting list for the following year's operations. As a result, the waiting list for these babies is already more than two year behind. Furthermore the situation is even more severe because these babies are in need of special bottles and teats to help with the feeding until the operation to close the palate can be performed. These bottles and drinking devices are expensive and most of these babies are from poor families and rural areas and cannot afford these expensive bottles, let alone the operation. Thus these babies become extremely weak as they cannot feed properly and because of the long waiting list, they grow up with these facial deformities and become pushed out and shunned by their communities because of their appearance.
Our aim..
is to create awareness for the needs of these babies and to raise enough money to be able to pay supply at least one bottle with the necessary teats to the parents of every baby and to be able to pay for the operation of a baby who has been on the waiting list the longest.
I ask you, please open your hearts and be part of changing the life of a little baby who has the potential to grow up healthy and normal and who will then be able to make a difference in the life of someone else one day, because he or she was given a chance.

My goal is to create awareness for the needs of these babies and to raise enough money to be able to pay for an operation for of a baby who has been on the waiting list the longest.
An operation costs R40 000. This is a child with potential. A child with hope for the future! Please help me to raise enough money and be part of changing a child's life, we can make a difference!!
